Solo's cultural life is concentrated in two palace complexes and the markets and workshops surrounding them. The city is quieter and less touristed than Yogyakarta, but its traditions of batik, gamelan, and wayang are equally strong — and the old town around the Keraton Kasunanan is easier to explore without crowds.
