Laweyan Mosque

The Laweyan Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Solo, its origins dating to the 16th-century Sultanate of Pajang that preceded the Mataram Kingdom. The current structure has been rebuilt several times but preserves elements of the original Javanese mosque architecture — the tiered roof, the solid teak pillars, and the simple layout designed for the tropical climate.

The mosque is an active place of worship in a neighbourhood that has long been associated with Islamic scholarship and textile wealth. It is not a major tourist attraction, but for visitors exploring the Laweyan batik district it is a worthwhile stop — the architecture is genuinely old and the atmosphere of the surrounding lanes in the early morning, with the call to prayer echoing between the high-walled compounds, is memorable.
