Bu Wongso Wijoyo is the most famous nasi liwet stall in Solo, operating from the same corner near the Mangkunegaran palace since 1950. The dish — coconut-milk rice with areh (thick coconut cream), vegetables, egg, and sometimes chicken — is served from the morning and sold out by early afternoon. Come before 11am to be sure of a plate.
The food is presented on banana leaf and eaten with the fingers in the traditional way. The atmosphere is informal and communal, and queuing alongside palace staff, market traders, and taxi drivers gives a pleasant sense of how thoroughly this is a local institution rather than a tourist attraction.
