Pasar Klewer is the largest batik market in Indonesia — a multi-storey covered market next to the Keraton Kasunanan that sells every type and quality of Javanese batik, from cheap printed fabric by the metre to fine hand-drawn batik tulis worth many times more. The stalls are crammed together and the selling is enthusiastic; knowing what you want before you arrive helps, but browsing is perfectly acceptable.
Solo batik has a distinct palette compared to other Javanese centres — the traditional court colours are dark brown (sogan) and cream, with dense geometric and floral patterns. The market also sells batik from across Java, so comparison shopping is easy. Bargain firmly but politely; the first price is generally not the last.
