Solo Batik Carnival

The Solo Batik Carnival takes place each June or July along Jalan Slamet Riyadi, the city's main boulevard. Hundreds of participants parade in elaborate costumes built around batik fabric — not the restrained court style of the keraton workshops but wildly inventive constructions using batik as a raw material for theatre and spectacle.

If your visit coincides with the carnival, it is worth rearranging your schedule to attend. The event draws large crowds of local spectators, and the atmosphere on Jalan Slamet Riyadi during the parade is genuinely festive. Check the current year's dates before travelling, as the timing varies.

A story
The Solo Batik Carnival was created in 2008 partly as a response to the success of the Jember Fashion Carnival in East Java — a conscious effort by Solo to reclaim its status as the spiritual home of Indonesian batik and to show that traditional fabric could be the basis for contemporary creative expression. The costumes, some of which take months to make, must incorporate batik as their central material. The results are often extraordinary.
