Tumurun is a private art museum established by a Solo batik business family in a beautifully converted colonial building in the city centre. The collection focuses on modern Indonesian art, with works by major national figures alongside a strong selection of contemporary pieces. It is one of the better private collections of Indonesian art open to the public.
The building itself is worth visiting — a restored Dutch-era merchant's house with high ceilings, tiled floors, and a courtyard garden that provides a cool respite from the street. Admission is free, though visitors are asked to register. The museum is genuinely committed to arts education and occasionally hosts artist talks and temporary exhibitions.
