Getting Around

Central Samarinda is navigable on foot if you are based near the waterfront. For longer trips — to the Islamic Centre, Pampang, or Sungai Kunjang port — you will need transport.

Angkot (shared minibuses) cover the main routes within the city and are cheap, though the network can be confusing for first-time visitors. Routes are indicated by the number painted on the front. The main angkot terminal near Pasar Pagi is the hub.

Ojek (motorcycle taxis) are the fastest way to get around and are found everywhere. Apps like Gojek and Grab work well in Samarinda and make ordering easy; they are generally more reliable than hailing an ojek on the street for a fair price.

Car rental with driver is the practical option for visiting Pampang, Tenggarong, or anywhere requiring time-sensitive logistics. Hotels can arrange this. Agree on the price and itinerary before departing.

The Mahakam ferry system connects the north and south banks of the river at several crossing points, and taking a public ferry is itself a pleasant ten-minute experience with good views of the city.
