Fort Marlborough

Fort Marlborough is the strongest reason to stop in Bengkulu. Built by the British East India Company in the early eighteenth century, the fort has thick walls, sea-facing views, old rooms and courtyards, and enough surviving structure to make the Bencoolen story feel real rather than footnoted.

It is best visited early or late in the day, when the heat eases and the light catches the walls. Pair it with the nearby British cemetery for a fuller picture of how remote and unhealthy the outpost once was.
