Eating Out

Gunungsitoli's food scene is modest but honest. The Beringin Market area in the centre is the best place to eat cheaply — warung stalls serve rice dishes from early morning, and the market itself is worth a browse. The city is known across North Sumatra for its durian, and for dodol — a sticky sweet made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and palm sugar — in a local durian-flavoured variation that is sold as a souvenir throughout the island.
