Getting There

Gunungsitoli is served by Binaka Airport (IATA: GNS), about 16 km south of the city centre. Wings Air operates the most frequent service — up to 28 flights a week to Medan, plus connections to Padang and Pekanbaru. Susi Air covers smaller regional routes. The airport is the only one on the island, so all air arrivals pass through here.

By sea, ferries from Sibolga on the Sumatran mainland dock at one of two ports: Angin Port or Roro Siwalubanua II Port. The crossing takes roughly ten hours and runs several times a week. Ferries also connect to Singkil and Padang. The ferry is significantly cheaper than flying and offers a classic Indonesian inter-island experience, but the schedule is less reliable and the seas can be rough. Book a cabin berth if you can.

From Gunungsitoli, the main road south through the island interior reaches Teluk Dalam in around three to four hours by shared minibus (angkot from the Faekhu Passenger Terminal) or rented motorbike. The road passes through forest and traditional villages; a motorbike gives you the freedom to stop.
