Ali Qapu Palace

Six-storey royal grandstand overlooking Naqsh-e Jahan Square

The Ali Qapu ("Grand Gate") Palace stands on the western edge of Naqsh-e Jahan Square and served as the main entrance to the royal precinct and as a grandstand for the royal court to watch polo matches and processions in the square below. Its six-storey main block culminates in a wide columned terrace with breathtaking views across the square. The uppermost music room is famous for its extraordinary stucco ceiling, cut into hundreds of vase and vessel shapes that were designed to improve the room's acoustics.
