Isfahan's historic core is compact enough to explore on foot, and almost every step reveals something remarkable. The great Safavid monuments around Naqsh-e Jahan Square are the obvious starting point, but the city rewards wandering — into the bazaar's covered alleys, across the ancient bridges at dusk, and into the Armenian quarter of Jolfa with its ornate churches.
