Iran does not permit the sale of alcohol, so there are no bars in Isfahan. What there are instead are tea houses (chaikhaneh) — many of them in historic locations — and a growing number of modern cafes, particularly in Jolfa and along Chaharbagh Boulevard, where younger Isfahanis gather. Traditional tea houses serve strong black tea in small glasses with a cube of sugar held between the teeth, along with hookah pipes (qalyan) and sweets. Several of the tea houses in the lower arches of Si-o-Se Pol are informal and very local in feel.
