A quietly devastating novel about a woman's life in a traditional Iranian household, told in sparse, elliptical prose. Vafi captures the texture of domestic life in an Iranian city — the routines, the constraints, the small rebellions — with more precision than most travel writing manages. Winner of the Yarvarzan Literary Prize, it has been widely translated and is one of the best contemporary Iranian novels accessible to a general reader.
