Chaharbagh Boulevard

Safavid grand avenue lined with craft shops and jewellers

Chaharbagh — "Four Gardens" — was laid out under Shah Abbas I as a royal promenade linking the palace gardens to the river, planted with plane trees and divided by a central channel. Today it is Isfahan's main commercial street, lined with jewellery workshops selling the silver filigree for which the city is famous, craft shops stocking ghalamkari textiles, and khatam inlaid woodwork. The underground bazaar beneath the southern section has a concentration of carpet sellers. The boulevard is best explored on foot from the Imam Square end southward toward the Si-o-Se Pol bridge — a walk of about twenty minutes that takes you through the full range of the city's craft economy.
