Ancient Congregational Mosque

The oldest mosque in Shiraz, founded in the 9th century

The Atigh Jameh Mosque is the oldest mosque in Shiraz, founded around 894 CE on the site of an earlier Zoroastrian fire temple. Much of what stands today is the result of later Safavid and Qajar rebuilding — the original fabric was repeatedly damaged by earthquakes — but the layout still preserves the early Islamic courtyard plan with iwans on four sides.

The most striking feature is the small stone structure in the middle of the courtyard called the Khodakhaneh, the "House of God," a 14th-century library built to house Qurans and modelled on the Kaaba. It is one of the few buildings of its kind anywhere. The mosque sees few foreign visitors despite sitting right next to Shah Cheragh.
