The obvious day trip from Shiraz is Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, about 60 kilometres to the northeast. It is one of the great archaeological sites of the ancient world — a vast complex of terraced palaces, bas-relief friezes, and monumental staircases. Taxis from Shiraz will take you there and back for a negotiated price; the drive takes about an hour.
