Bars and Cafes

There are no bars in Shiraz. Iran has been a dry country since the 1979 Revolution, and the famous Shiraz wines — the city was producing wine 7,000 years ago and continued until that point — survive only in their export, the grape variety named for the city.

What Shiraz does have is a strong café culture. Traditional teahouses serve black tea and qalyan (water-pipe), often with light music and dim light, while a wave of modern coffee shops has opened in the past decade, especially around the universities and in the gardens of restored Qajar houses. They are some of the most relaxed places to spend an afternoon in town.
