Fire Temple at Qasr-e Abunasr

Remains of a Sassanian fire temple at Qasr-e Abunasr

Among the ruins of the Sassanian-era fortress at Qasr-e Abunasr stand the remains of a small four-arched fire temple — a chahar taq, the typical floorplan of Persian Zoroastrian temples. The four piers and connecting arches once supported a dome under which the sacred fire was kept burning.

Little remains beyond the foundations and a few standing walls, but the chahar taq layout is clear and the setting — open hilltop, with views back over the Shiraz plain — gives a tangible feel for what these temples looked like across pre-Islamic Iran. Take water; there is no shade.
