Qasr-e Abunasr

Ruined Sassanian-era fortress on a hill east of Shiraz

Qasr-e Abunasr is a ruined fortified complex on a rocky outcrop about 9 km east of the city. The site was first occupied in the Achaemenid period and reused as a Sassanian-era stronghold, with later additions through the early Islamic centuries. The walls and bastions are clearly visible, and the hilltop gives wide views over the surrounding plain.

The site is not heavily signposted and there is no visitor centre. Excavations by archaeologists from the Metropolitan Museum in the 1930s recovered Sassanian seals and pottery, most of which is now in New York. For travellers interested in the pre-Islamic layers of the Shiraz plain, this is a quietly rewarding stop, easily combined with Persepolis on the way out of the city.
