Mary's Well

Mary's Well is the outdoor ornamental fountain in a small public square near the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, built over the ancient spring that the Orthodox tradition associates with the Annunciation. The current fountain structure is modern — the well has been rebuilt several times over the centuries — but it marks the location of a water source that has been in continuous use since antiquity.

The square around the well is pleasant and gives a good view of the old quarter. Just below the square, excavations in 2009 uncovered the remains of a Roman-era bathhouse and 2,000-year-old street; sections of the finds are now displayed in the Ancient Bathhouse visitor center nearby.
