Shiroyama Park

Wooded hill above the old town with the ruins of Takayama Castle

Shiroyama Park covers the wooded hill east of the old town, formerly the site of Takayama Castle. The castle was demolished in 1695, and only stone foundations and earthworks remain — overgrown with cedars and reachable by paths from several directions.

The walk up takes about twenty minutes from the old town, with viewpoints over the rooftops of Sanmachi and across to the snow-capped peaks of the Hida range. The cherry blossom in mid-April and the maples in late October are particularly good here.
