Chomon Gorge

Chomon Gorge follows the Abu River through a narrow, wooded valley between Yamaguchi and Hagi. It was recognised as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1923, a year after Hasui Kawase included it in his Selected Views of Japan print series.

The gorge is best treated as a slow walk rather than a quick roadside stop. A roughly 5 km trail follows the river, with rock walls, pools, and forest making it a good break from Hagi's samurai streets and temple sights.
