Fukiya Elementary School is a preserved wooden school from 1909, built when the surrounding copper-mining area was still prosperous. It later became known as one of Japan's oldest wooden schools still in use, before closing in 2012. Even from the outside, the old classrooms and timber facade help explain Fukiya's rise and slow quieting.
