Takahashi

Okayama castle town below Japan's highest surviving original mountain castle.

Takahashi is a small castle town in Okayama Prefecture, best known for Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, Japan's highest surviving original mountain castle. It is much less visited than Himeji or Matsumoto, which is part of the appeal: the climb, stone walls, and compact keep still feel like a journey rather than a queue.

The town below the castle has enough to justify lingering after the descent. Raikyu-ji has a fine Zen garden, and the old samurai houses around Orii House and Haibara House keep Takahashi connected to its feudal past.

Travel here takes a little planning, especially if you also want to reach the Fukiya area, where red-brown bengara pigment shaped a distinctive old merchant village. Even without Fukiya, Takahashi is a strong day from Okayama or Kurashiki for travelers who like castles, quiet streets, and places that have not been sanded smooth by mass tourism.
