Harborland

Harborland is a large waterfront shopping and entertainment district at the western end of Kobe's harbour, centred on two large shopping malls and a collection of hotels. It is a pleasant place to walk in the evenings, with views across the harbour toward Port Island and the Port Tower. The Ferris wheel visible from the waterfront is a Kobe landmark.

The district is primarily commercial but the harbour-side promenade is free and enjoyable, particularly at sunset. It connects by a walkway to the adjacent Meriken Park, making it possible to walk the whole length of Kobe's inner harbour from Harborland to the maritime museum in one stretch.

A story
Harborland was built in the 1980s and 1990s on former freight yards, part of the transformation of Kobe's old industrial waterfront into a leisure and retail district. The timing proved unfortunate — the development was still being completed when the 1995 earthquake struck. Some of the newer buildings survived; older ones did not. The post-earthquake reconstruction of Harborland became part of the wider debate about what Kobe should look like after rebuilding.
