Weathercock House is one of the signature Western-style residences of Kitano, the hillside district where foreign merchants and diplomats built homes after Kobe opened to overseas trade. The red brick, steep roof, and little weather vane on the gable make it instantly recognisable, and the house has become a shorthand image for old international Kobe.
Inside, period rooms show the late-19th-century domestic world of the German trader who built it, with European fittings set against a Japanese port-city backdrop. It works best as part of a slow walk through Kitano's lanes, paired with other ijinkan houses, small cafes, and the views down toward the harbour.
