Arashiyama Tempura Aoi

Counter tempura restaurant overlooking the bamboo grove entrance, omakase-style courses fried to order

Tempura Aoi is a compact counter restaurant at the edge of the Sagano bamboo grove, serving seasonal vegetable and river fish tempura fried in a light sesame oil at the counter in front of the guest. The menu changes monthly: wild mountain vegetables in spring, summer ayu sweetfish from the Kamo River, autumn mushrooms and Kyoto eggplant.

The lunch set is the primary offering and includes eight to ten pieces of tempura served with rice, dashi broth, and a small pickles plate. Reserve for dinner; walk-ins at lunch are often possible before noon.
