Daikakuji began as the villa of Emperor Saga before becoming a temple. It is closely associated with Saga Goryu, an ikebana school, and displays of flower arrangement are often part of the visit.
The temple grounds are spacious, with artworks inside and calm views over Osawa Pond. It is a good Arashiyama-area stop when you want something quieter than the bamboo grove and Tenryu-ji circuit.
