Jōjakkō-ji Temple

Jōjakkō-ji is a hillside temple in Arashiyama, especially good in autumn when the maples turn red and gold. The climb through the grounds is part of the visit, with stone steps, mossy corners, and a small pagoda set among the trees.

Above the pagoda, the view opens out across Kyoto. It is a quieter, more atmospheric stop than the busiest Arashiyama sights, and it pairs well with the bamboo grove and Tenryū-ji if you start early.
