Issen Yoshoku has been serving Kyoto okonomiyaki -- a thinner, crispier version of the Osaka pancake style, topped with green onion and bonito flakes -- from its Shijo-Gion address since 1935. The format is counter cooking: a thin crepe-like batter poured and folded on an iron griddle, eaten with a sweet Worcestershire-style sauce.
The restaurant is open until midnight and makes a natural stop after Gion evening walks. The menu is short and prices are low; the queue can be substantial on weekends.
