Mount Yufu rises west of Beppu, a clean volcanic cone with a rewarding ridge walk and wide views over the hot-spring country below. The climb from the main trailhead is a proper hike rather than a casual stroll, with a junction near the crater leading to the east and west peaks.
Allow enough time for the ascent and descent, and bring water, layers, and footwear with grip. The upper path can feel exposed in poor weather, but on a clear day this is one of the best natural outings near Beppu.
