The Contemporary Art Museum Kumamoto, known locally as CAMK, occupies the third floor of the Tsuruya department store building in Shimotōri. The collection spans Japanese and international contemporary art with a particularly strong holding of works by James Turrell, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Marina Abramović — many of them site-specific commissions for the building.
The free-access "Home Gallery" lounge area, also designed as an artwork, is a good place to rest tired feet between Shimotōri shopping and a tram trip out to Suizenji.
