Musashizuka Park

A quiet park on the northern outskirts of Kumamoto containing the grave of Miyamoto Musashi, Japan's most famous swordsman. The grave itself is a simple stone marker; a small museum on the site holds copies of his calligraphy and ink paintings, alongside reproductions of the Book of Five Rings.

The park rewards anyone with an interest in samurai history or in The Book of Five Rings — a slim volume on strategy that has had a long second life as a business and self-help text. Easiest reached by taxi from central Kumamoto.

A story
Miyamoto Musashi — duellist, painter, and author of The Book of Five Rings — spent his last years at Kumamoto under the patronage of the Hosokawa daimyo. He died in 1645 in a cave nearby; his ashes are interred here in armour, said to be standing upright so he can salute his lord's processions on the road below.
