Lake Ezu is Kumamoto's soft-edged outdoor escape, a spring-fed lake system that runs south from the Suizenji area into a broad ribbon of water, reeds, paths, and small boat landings. It is not dramatic in the castle-and-samurai sense, but it shows the city at its most relaxed.
The lake is good for a slow walk, a jog, a picnic, or a family boat ride. The water comes from Kumamoto's famous groundwater, and the birdlife and low banks make it a useful counterweight to a sightseeing day spent inside museums, trams, and castle grounds.
