The prefectural art museum stands within the wooded castle grounds and was designed by Maekawa Kunio, a senior figure of Japanese postwar modernism. The permanent collection covers Western art from antiquity to the twentieth century, Japanese paintings and prints, and a notable group of works on paper from the local Hosokawa family collection.
The museum has two campuses — the original 1976 building near the castle keep and an honkan annex elsewhere in the grounds. Cool architecture, manageable scale, and the price of entry is low. Closed on Mondays.
