Fusaki Beach

West-coast beach famous for sunset views over the outer islands

Fusaki is one of Ishigaki's most popular beaches, tucked on the western coast where the island curves around to face the open channel. The water is clear and calm, snorkelling is good in the shallows, and the orientation means you get some of the most spectacular sunsets in the Yaeyama chain — the outer islands of Kohama and Iriomote silhouetted against the sky as the sun drops.

The beach is accessible by car in about 20 minutes from Ishigaki town. Sunbeds and snorkelling equipment are available for rent, and there are a couple of small cafes nearby. This is a calmer and slightly less crowded alternative to Kabira Bay, with actual swimming permitted in the open water. The reef close to shore holds sea turtles; patient snorkellers who stay still at the surface often see them cruising past.
