Tojinbaka, the Tang People's Grave, is a brightly decorated Chinese-style memorial on Ishigaki. It commemorates hundreds of Hokkien Chinese labourers whose ship ran aground here in the 19th century while they were being transported across the Pacific.
The monument is small, but the story behind it is powerful and gives useful context to Ishigaki's place in the wider history of migration, labour, and empire in the region.
