Kasaoka

Okayama port city for Seto Inland Sea islands, horseshoe crabs, flowers, and ramen.

Kasaoka is a small port city on the western edge of Okayama Prefecture, useful for one clear reason: it opens onto the Kasaoka Islands. Shiraishi Island is the usual target, with beaches, walking paths, and Seto Inland Sea views close enough for a day but slow enough to feel removed from the main rail corridor.

The mainland has its own odd identity. Kasaoka is proud of horseshoe crabs, which get a dedicated museum and a dinosaur park next door, and it has a serious local ramen culture built around chicken broth and slices of simmered chicken. Seasonal flower fields at Kasaoka Bay Farm add another reason to stop if the timing is right.

Kasaoka is not a polished showpiece like Kurashiki, but it is more than a station between Okayama and Fukuyama. Come for an island day, then fill the edges with ramen, the horseshoe-crab museum, and the bay fields.

Eating Out

Kasaoka ramen is the local dish to look for. It usually means a clear chicken-based broth with firm noodles and slices of simmered chicken instead of the pork chashu common elsewhere in Japan. The style grew around a port town with sailors, market workers, and quick meals, and it is still the easiest way to taste something specific to Kasaoka.
