Kuwait City is the obvious day trip from Ahmadi — a 40-minute drive north brings you to the National Museum, the Kuwait Towers, the old souk district, and the Gulf seafront. The city is worth a full day, particularly the waterfront corniche at dusk.
Fahaheel is a coastal town just east of Ahmadi, with a small traditional souk and fish market. It's the closest taste of an older Kuwaiti fishing settlement and takes less than 20 minutes to reach.
Al-Kout Mall sits on the waterfront in Fahaheel and combines shopping with a pleasant marina. It's a popular evening destination for Ahmadi residents who want to eat by the water without going all the way to Kuwait City.
The Burgan Oil Field extends south of Ahmadi and is the second-largest oil field in the world by reserves. It is not open to visitors, but driving south along the highway gives a sense of the scale of the operation — flares burning in the distance, pumping stations stretching to the horizon. This is the landscape that was set ablaze in 1991 when retreating Iraqi forces torched hundreds of wells, causing one of the worst environmental disasters in history.
