Al-Mina Archaeological Site

Roman colonnades, Crusader cathedral ruins, and the ancient harbour — the archaeological heart of the old city

Al-Mina occupies the tip of the peninsula that was once the island fortress of ancient Tyre. The site holds a layered accumulation of history: Roman colonnaded streets running toward the sea, the ruins of a Crusader cathedral, Byzantine mosaics, and the remnants of what was the ancient harbour. The colonnades are well-preserved in sections, and the juxtaposition of Roman stonework beside Crusader masonry beside fishing boats makes the timeline of the place tangible in a way that a textbook cannot.

The road of columns leading toward the ancient harbour is the visual centrepiece — a wide processional way flanked by granite and marble shafts that would have impressed travellers arriving from the sea. Today the harbour still functions as a fishing port, and the sounds of working boats mix with the silence of the ruins. Al-Mina is the smaller, more intimate of Tyre's two main archaeological zones and rewards slow exploration. Check current access conditions before visiting given the 2024 conflict's impact on the southern Lebanon region.
