Concubine Lane

A narrow, atmospheric alley in the heart of the Old Town — properly called Lorong Panglima — running between Jalan Bandar Timah and Jalan Sultan Yussuf. The two-storey shophouses on either side have been cleaned up and turned into small stalls selling everything from local snacks (egg tarts, pomelo, gula apong ice cream, fresh soya milk) to Instagram-bait fashion and trinkets.

It can get jammed at weekends with day-trippers from KL and Penang, but is at its best on a quiet weekday morning. Cross the street to Wife Lane (Market Lane) and Second Concubine Lane (Lorong Hale) for a quieter wander.

A story
Local legend has it that the tin tycoon Yau Tet Shin built three parallel lanes off Jalan Bandar Timah in the early 1900s — Wife Lane, Concubine Lane and Second Concubine Lane — to house his official wife, his concubine and his mistresses respectively. The story is impossible to verify; the names stuck.
