Getting Around

The Old Town and most of the city's main eating places are walkable from each other in 10–20 minutes — exhausting in the midday sun, easy in the early morning or evening. The cave temples and Kellie's Castle are spread across a 20 km radius and require a vehicle.

Grab (ride-hailing) is the easiest way to cover the spread-out attractions: a ride from the Old Town to Sam Poh Tong is well under RM10. Local taxis at the railway and bus station are abundant; agree the fare first if not metered. Car rental at the airport or railway station opens up the day-trip options (Kellie's Castle, the cave temples in the south, Lost World of Tambun) without queueing for Grab between each one.

The Old Town Heritage Walking Trail — a self-guided route signposted with bronze plaques on the pavement and downloadable from the tourist office — is the best way to take in the colonial centre on foot.
