Ipoh's attractions split into two categories: the cave temples tucked into the limestone karsts on the edge of town, and the British-era colonial architecture of the Old Town. The temples — Sam Poh Tong, Kek Lok Tong, Perak Tong and half a dozen others — are remarkable natural spaces as much as religious ones, with Buddhas set among stalactites and panoramic viewpoints reached by hundreds of steps. The Old Town, west of the Kinta River, is a compact grid of shophouses, heritage buildings, and crumbling grand institutions from Ipoh's tin-boom years. Outside the city, the eccentric unfinished mansion of Kellie's Castle is the most characterful half-day trip.
