Han Chin Pet Soo

A small but beautifully presented museum housed in the 1893 Hakka miners' clubhouse on Jalan Bijeh Timah, just behind Concubine Lane. The exhibits walk you through the rise and fall of Ipoh's tin-mining empire — the dredges, the open pit mines, the labour, the wealth, the vice — and culminate in a recreation of the club's original gambling den and opium parlour, complete with mannequins reclining on the wooden beds.

Tours are by free booking (online, several days in advance), run hourly during the day, and last about 75 minutes with a guide. Frequently rated the best single attraction in Ipoh on TripAdvisor, and rightly so.

A story
Han Chin Pet Soo was founded in 1893 as a private members' club for the Hakka tin-mining tycoons of Ipoh and was for decades a place of pure male vice — opium, gambling, prostitutes — strictly closed to non-members. It re-opened in 2014 as a museum, the first Hakka tin-mining museum in Malaysia.
