Built in 1912 by the La Salle Brothers, St Michael's is arguably the grandest colonial building in Ipoh — a long, arcaded two-storey school with a central clock tower that could easily be mistaken for a convent or a small European railway station. During the Japanese occupation in World War II it served as the military administration headquarters for the whole state of Perak. It is still a working school and its grounds are not freely open, but the facade is worth a look from the street.
