Tasik Cermin (Mirror Lake)

A small, surreal limestone-rimmed lake on the southern outskirts of Ipoh in the Tasek hills, reached by a five-minute walk through a low natural cave-tunnel that opens into a perfectly round basin of cliff and water. The water is glassy still on a windless morning — hence Tasik Cermin, "Mirror Lake".

Access is via a working temple at the back of a kampung off Jalan Pulai; ask politely at the temple gate and offer a small donation. Bring shoes that can get wet — the tunnel is muddy. Best in the early morning before the sun gets too high.

A story
The lake sits inside a near-perfect karst basin — limestone cliffs on all sides, water in the middle, sky directly overhead. Reaching it requires walking through a narrow natural tunnel cut through the cliff at the south end of the Tasek limestone hills. Few visitors take the trouble; most days the lake is empty of people.
