The gold jewellery shops concentrated along Jalan Masjid India and the adjacent lanes form one of KL's best areas to buy gold — both traditional Malay and South Indian jewellery designs, as well as more contemporary pieces. Shops here deal in 22-carat and 24-carat gold, priced by weight at the daily market rate plus a making charge. The traditional Malay designs — fine filigree work, kerongsang brooches, and bridal sets — are particularly distinctive and harder to find elsewhere in the city.
Bargaining is less prevalent than in some markets; prices are fairly fixed based on gold weight, though the making charge has some flexibility. Many shops also buy and sell second-hand pieces. The concentration of competing shops makes it easy to compare prices for the same design.
