A Famosa is the surviving gate of the Portuguese fortress built after the conquest of Melaka in the early 1500s. Most of the fort was demolished under British rule, but the small stone gate remains one of the oldest European structures in Southeast Asia and a useful anchor for understanding Melaka's colonial layers.
