This well at the foot of Bukit China dates back to 1459, when it was built for the Chinese princess Hang Li Poh and her entourage after her marriage to Sultan Mansur Shah. It was the primary water source for Melaka's Chinese community for centuries and was considered so strategically important that the Portuguese, Dutch, and Japanese all fought to control it during their respective occupations.
The well never runs dry, even during droughts. Locals say that drinking from it ensures you will return to Melaka. The surrounding area, Bukit China, is the largest Chinese cemetery outside China — over 12,000 graves spread across 25 hectares of hillside, some dating to the Ming Dynasty.
